Artwork details:
Path in Kivinokka is a vibrant and enchanting sous-bois (forest undergrowth) scene, born from an inspiring plein air painting session in the Kivinokka nature park. This piece captures the dense heart of the forest, featuring numerous trees and rich undergrowth, continuing a tradition that greatly inspired Vincent van Gogh. To paint this scene, I utilized an analogous color palette leaning heavily into turquoise blue. Furthermore, the application of heavy impasto marks builds both texture and depth, giving the entire forest floor and the thicket of trees a striking three-dimensionality.
The composition directly echoes the sous-bois genre, which focuses on the intimate view of the forest interior rather than a distant landscape, allowing the artist to capture the immediate, enclosed experience of the undergrowth, with the sky barely visible. Van Gogh was greatly inspired by the sous-bois genre, painting scenes of trees and undergrowth in Paris, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers.
